sleeping in the snow

weekend.  time for another adventure.  i'd been jonesing for some winter camping, so time to make it happen.  rory from house of hawes came out from the coast to join kris and mary and i on the lifelong quest to be awesome.

we headed out to a lost little lake around noon, snowshoed in and within an hour had a 4 foot deep hole dug out and a sweet tarp fort built for four.

tarp fort for 4.  deep enough snow to stand up inside once it was dug out.

once the firewood was split and the setup was set up, it was time to get down to business.

kris getting down to business.
the rest of saturday was spent eating and funning around.  the fallen tree wall caught fire at some point, and there was definately some time devoted to digging to the smoldering roots and then putting them out. all good.

rory on the backside, in 3 feet of snow, seeking the smoldering
we all slept pretty well.  or at least i slept well enough to not be aware of the suffering of others.  which is kinda the same thing.  as usual, i was first one up.  i put some breakfast on (read:in) the fire and went for a snowshoe around the lake.

3 snug bugs.
as i was out, the sun came up officially and i finished my 4 km in bright warm sun.

sun coming up

got the lake to myself.  awesome

logged a few km on these for sure.
even though we were only camped about 20m from the shore, our camp was pretty much invisible, except the smoke from the awesome fire.

by the time i got back, rory was up and kris was getting there.  we ate, shot and packed up slowly, savouring the day and the awesome.

got the fort down.  can see the 4 foot snow walls all around
about 3:30 it was time to head back.

we all got back safe and sound and at a reasonable time.  glad i got a sweet snow camp in this year.  glad to have sweet people to head out with too.  maybe time for 1 more this year
