elton lake at full moon solstice

the end of june i ended up back in manitoba and managed to fit in a few days paddling in nopiming park with rude.

we headed for elton lake.  3 portages and some sunny lakes in from the truck.

lunch at site 2

once we finished the portages, we devoted some time to fishing and it wasn't long before we had this small mouth as dinner.  a few more got added before we got to our camp as well.

dinner.

bbq steak and onion bagels were also on the menu.

more dinner

we were camped on a small island about half way into elton lake.  the sun was out and we were full.  time to relax until the mosquitoes come out.

crazy blue and greens from our island camp

night reading with the candle lantern, some beverage and earnest shackleton

The next morning we headed to the end of elton lake where we again set up camp on a sweet island.  one of the things i miss most living in kelowna is the lack of canoe trips opportunities.  we have done some sweet ones in bc for sure, but there are not even close to the opportunities there are close to my manitoba home.

islands of granite and green everywhere.

we parked the canoe at the bottom of a granite cliff, scrambled up and built this guy, pointing the way to the next lake. along the way we managed to pick up way more fish.  some pickeral, some more small mouth and a few big jackfish.  mmmmmm.

that way to seagrim lake.

im pooping. the outhouses offer good views.

The next night was a full moon, and solstice.  strawberry moon they call it.  my camera didn't capture the crazy red/pink hue of the moon, but needless to say, it was worth braving the bugs to watch rise.

Our last day was overcast but awesome paddling day.  we made it back in good but not rushed time, and really took our time on the portages.

heading back up elton lake

calm and awesome

Thanks rude for making some time for this trip, can;t wait to do it again next year, maybe with less portages.

  1. That's an awesome trip. I also lived in kelowna for 12 years. I never really realized until I moved back how much more fishing and canoeing options there were
